Subject: [JTC1_SWG-A] The first success of SWG-A User Needs Summary Version1.0

I would like to report the first success of SWG-A User Needs Summary Version 1.0 (UNS1.0). A mapping result between UNS1.0 and a draft international standard was provided to ISO and contributed to improve the standard they are developing. Please read the story in detail below.

It is very important for the future of our UNS1.0 to achieve this kind of visual results. I, as one of the co-chairs of Ad Hoc 9, would like to ask Ad Hoc members to do the work of mapping soon and report results to the Ad Hoc so that the Ad Hoc can develop instructions for Standardization Organizations.

Regards,

Hajime Yamada

----- The first success of SWG-A UNS1.0-----

1. The Project Editor of ISO 9241-20 (General Guidelines for All ICT Products and Services), Hajime Yamada, performed the mapping between Draft International Standard (DIS) 9241-20 and UNS1.0 in early October.

2. He found that the Need 6.9 (Stamina), 6.11 (Grasp), 6.12 (Pinch) and 6.13 (Twist) are not described in DIS 9241-20. He also found several other needs are also not covered in DIS 9241-20.

3. The meeting of ISO/TC159/SC4/WG6 held in Berlin on October 26 and 27 considered the above mentioned gaps. And the meeting concluded to make editorial change in Clause 6.2.5.1.

(6.2.5.1 in DIS 9241-20)

6.2.5.1 Limited physical force and movement

ICT equipment and services should support intended users who have limited physical movement (e.g., users of wheel chairs).

a) The placement of controls and displays should be adjustable to heights and locations that the intended users can reach.

b) Controls should be movable with the minimum force required (within the constraints of the operation being performed).

c) Controls should be operable using either hand.

d) Interface mechanisms should be provided to support assistive technology devices.

NOTE Such devices include eye movement trackers, headsticks, mouthsticks, and remote controllers.

(Observation)

Even though the title mentioned about “limited physical force,” the main text did not mention about “limited physical force.”

(Decision of ISO/TC159/SC4/WG6: Editorial Changes)

Separate force and movement into two clauses putting movement first;

Make current (b) into force, and add stamina, grasp, pinch, twist and avoiding need for simultaneous operation;

Include NOTE that the movement and force are often combined; and

Add further examples.

4. The meeting of ISO/TC159/SC4/WG6 also decided to make other editorial changes regarding the gaps found by the mapping. In addition the meeting decided to add the mapping results as an informative annex to 9241-20.

5. The Project Editor and the Co-editor (Jim Carter) will work to finalize drafting and then go proceed to the Final Draft International Standard ballot in April/May of 2007.

6. The meeting expressed appreciation to SWG.

-----The resolution to create Ad Hoc 9 (for your information) -----

SWG-A Brussels Resolution 6:  Establishment of Ad Hoc 9 on User Needs Mapping and Gap Analysis

The JTC 1 Special Working Group on Accessibility establishes the Ad Hoc 9 on User Needs Mapping and Gap Analysis to do the User Needs Mapping and Gap Analysis on sample standards. Ad Hoc Leaders: Dr. Jim Carter (Canada) and Dr. Hajime Yamada (Japan). The following sample standards and initial participants were identified:

Confirm ISO Guide 71 - Ms. Andi Snow-Weaver (US)

Confirm ISO 9241-20 - Dr. Hajime Yamada (Japan) and Ms. Andi Snow-Weaver (US)

JIS X 8341-5 - Mr. Shigetoyo Nomura (Japan)

ISO 9241-171 - Dr. Jim Carter (Canada) and Dr. Gregg Vanderheiden (JTC 1/SC 35)

WCAG 2.0, UAAG 1.0 and ATAG 2.0 - Ms. Judy Brewer (W3C/WAI)

Section 508 - Mr. Alex Li (US)

Individualized Adaptability and Accessibility for Learning, Education and Training - ISO/IEC 24751 Parts 1, 2 and 3 - Mr. Andy Heath (UK)

FSG Keyboard I/O and FSG AT SPI specification - Ms. Janina Sajka (Free Standards Group)

Section 255 - Dr. Gregg Vanderheiden (JTC 1/SC 35)

ITU-T F.700 and E.135 - Ms. Josée Auber (France)

EN 1332-4 - Dr. John Gill (UK)

Additionally, the ad hoc will develop instructions (including examples of user needs mapping on a sample set of standards and draft standards) for use by SDOs. The following overall method is recommended in the development of instructions:

1st pass user needs mapping (direct mapping): Step through user needs. Identify provision(s) in the standard that directly address specific user needs and record the specific clause of the standard addressing the user need as "directly addressing". Optionally include the text of provisions.

2nd pass user needs mapping (related mapping): Look at user needs not yet addressed. Identify other provision(s) in the standard that are related in any way to these user needs and record them as "related". Optionally record the text of provisions or the references and relationship type (type of matching).

These instructions will also include information on how mapping is recorded and reported.

A call for additional ad hoc participants will be issued.
